As a second-year PhD student at The Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY), I am working towards a doctoral degree in Mathematics. I earned my Master of Arts in Mathematics through the Contiguous Bachelor’s/Master’s Pathway (4+1 program) at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Currently, my research interests lie in Hyperbolic Geometry with an emphasis on Fuchsian groups and their role in constructing hyperbolic surfaces. Particularly, I hope to further my studies to Teichmüller Theory or 3-Manifold Theory.
I am also honored to serve as an Adjunct Lecturer at Baruch College, CUNY. I was an Open Knowledge Fellow with the Mina Rees Library, where I learned to leverage openly-licensed, free educational resources to provide our diverse student body with the momentum for upward mobility. Drawing on my passions and experiences, I aspire to be a research mathematician and equity-minded educator in my field. email: jtom@gradcenter.cuny.edu
